    DVB-T technology for TV transmission

Moves are under way to introduce Digital Technology for television transmission by the Mass Media and Information Ministry by next year. It is the universal trend to convert the terrestrial broadcasting to digital technology, Media and Information Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa said.

Sri Lanka at present uses analogue technology for television transmission since the commencement of television transmission.

Accordingly, DVB-T technology will be used for television transmission as most countries have adapted to use the DVB-T digital television transmission technique.

"The current transmission system has to be upgraded so as to tally with the digital system. Therefore Rs. 150 million each will be allocated for both Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation (SLRC) and Independent Television Network (ITN) in the 2010 budget. The amount will be utilised to purchase equipment and antennas required for the digital technology," the Minister said. .

This change is going to be big threat for DTV &, Other DTH operators, since DVB-T could be encrypt like DVB-S & Local TV provider can provide premium channels at a cost! Well this change might cripple the DTH industry in SL like which happen to mobile operators! However customers will be benefited due a price war

Also I got to know that dialog did some test on DVB-T, I assume that they planning to cut down the sat transponder cost by switching to DVB-T where they can utilize there mobile towers with DVB-T transmition equipment to provide same service , by only having a downlink station
          Receivers : Dream-box 500+ (with PLI Jade 3 ) / (Gemini 4.70)
          FTA/KEYs :Star-sat SR-X 1500D Supper MK II (C/Ku) Packages :Zenega 1004is Ku (Dish TV)
          Dish : 6Feet (Mesh C/Ku ) Motorized (euro-star) / 75 Cm Ku Dish with Dual LNB

          Tracked Sat's :PAK-SAT38E to SKY138 E

          CS: Dialog TV, Dstv(MCK)-68E,Sky-138 E, Dishtv , Tarce on Asiasat 2,5 , Jsat 128E ,Sky -138E

          Location: Makola, Sri Lanka

No all u need a UHF antenna, compatible (which would be an investment) STB (setupbox) and a TV set (:-))
Advantageous are like it is digital, no ghost, crystal clear, stereo audio etc, ( I think we'll have to have number of transmission stations to cover the whole country but no need to have individual towers as now, one tower would transmit all the ch's, so no more multi directed antennas in you roof top, one antenna will give you whole boutique..)

Lets see what SLGOV is planning to do, first they should covert analogue broadcasting to digital then transmission towers (an existing mobile transmission tower would do the job) and gov should come up with a good quality low cost STB for all (People's STB???). if not this will not be the media revolution that gov media trying to convince.
will see.. don't count for days this might never come.. (As gov have got so many other priorities like MIHIN Air, etc)
Remember earlier TRC had pledged to launch the very first SRL satellite in this year, but see no one remembers it now.
